Each year, thousands of Olive Ridley sea turtles return to the shores of Tamil Nadu to nest. But this year, something is terribly wrong. Over 1,400 turtles have died—far more than in previous years. Their lifeless bodies, many of them females carrying eggs, have been washing up along the coast, leaving fishermen and conservationists alarmed. This crisis is not just about the turtles. Olive Ridleys play a crucial role in maintaining marine ecosystems. They feed on crustaceans, aerate the seabed, and contribute to the ocean’s delicate balance. If their numbers keep dwindling, the sea’s rich biodiversity—including fish populations—will suffer. For coastal communities, the loss is deeply personal. Turtles are sacred guests, tied to their traditions and livelihoods. Without them, the fishing industry itself is at risk. If thousands of turtles die this year, and the trend continues, the ocean will lose its ability to sustain marine life.
