Shatranj Ke Khilari, also subtitled and later internationally released with the translated title The Chess Players, is a 1977 Indian film written and directed by Satyajit Ray, based on Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name. Shatranj Ke Khiladi is a Hindi drama film, which is partially based on Premchand's short story 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi'. This story is about the luxurious Nawabs of the Mughal province of Awadh in the 19th century, who were so engrossed in their pleasures that even words like useless and worthless would prove to be less than their glory. Then there remains no doubt about how the foreigners captured half of India without a fight. One of such worthless Nawabs were also two Nawabs of Lucknow province, Mir Roshan Ali and Mirza Sajjad Ali. They are still enjoying the estates inherited from their great grandfathers with great pomp.
