@TrentonPalmer and I head south to visit our parents who are neighbors in coastal Central California and met up with some of my favorite aerial cinematographers (links below). Thanks to @Chris_kunk for housing our bushplanes at the Central Coast Jet Center's hangar in Santa Maria (KSMX). We then met up with Chris and Tristan Twisselman to discover backcountry / sidecountry flying in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties from Santa Ynez / Kunkle Field (KIZA). You may have seen some of their incredible content on Instagram lately and I'm sure there's lots more to come. I fly with Trent in his Legend Cub Nomad, 2 Super Cubs and one Carbon Cub to a beautiful private strip on a homestead from the 1800's where Travis meets us in his MD500E helicopter and eventually a Robinson R44. I interview Chris about his war her grandfather, Jim Kunkle. He flew P-38s in WWII, got shot down, recovered, rejoined the fight and lived a long 103 years! He and his son are the namesake of Kunkle Field. Then we go grab the Bogey at IZA and hit another private grass strip with crossing runways! On our way home we clean off our bushwheels and hit a grassy knoll overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Finally, we form up, dodge seagulls, and fly formation up and down the beach letting Chris and Tristan film us at golden hour in the Golden State. California is known to be pretty restrictive in a lot of ways and aviation is no exception. We adhered to all the rules and kept it safe through thorough briefings and flight discipline. That said, I'd come back down here to fly ANY TIME. Lukily LOG allows me to correct some of it but there's some polarized banding (my 14mm wide angle lens shows the banding the worst. I color corrected in Davinci Resolve and then tested out some color grades which is why it's a bit inconsistent throughout, but each scene has its own. The saturation is a bit too low for my liking. Let me know if you have input beyond that. I'm also shooting with my iPhone 16 Pro, @insta360 x5, Ace Pro, and Ace Pro 2. Finally, I'm A/B Testing two thumbnails. The version from a drone showing us parked at the grassy knoll is credit to Chris Kunkle. 0:00 Central Coast Jet Center Santa Maria 1:04 Santa Ynez, Briefing 2:24 Homestead Grass Strip (Private) 7:00 Jim Kunkle, P-38 WWII Hero 10:58 Another private grass strip with crossing runways 13:28 Grassy knoll overlooking the Pacific Ocean 16:32 California Beach run in 5 bushplane formation 18:21 Squarespace
