Recorded: Thursday 16 October 2025 Title: Gen AI Killed the P.I.D Star The impact of AI on PIDs and PID Systems Presenters: PID IG (Amir Aryani, Adrian Burton, Nobuko Miyari, Josefine Nordling, Lyle Winton, Mingfang Wu) DESCRIPTION Some people argue that Generative AI removes the need for Persistent Identifiers. Others maintain that PIDs are even more important in an AI world because there will many more things in the world and we will need persistent names for most of those things. Nowadays, our bots are perfectly capable of recognising a thing for what it is and giving it a code (face recognition for instance), so perhaps it’s not the PIDs that AI will kill, but the PID Systems? PID Systems maintain the connection between the invariant name and the thing. Can AI give a name to any thing? And if the same or similar thing is presented to AI, can it give it the same name? This meeting of the PID Interest Group will address this debate and the many questions it raises. Speakers will highlight different ways in which (Gen)AI has impacted PID Systems and what we might expect in the future. This session continues the discussion started at Research Data Alliance P24 virtual session. AGENDA Introduction to PID IG for newcomers (Adrian Burton, Nobuko Miyairi) PIDs as trust markers in a responsible AI environment (Josefine Nordling) The Role of AI in the Transformation of Scholarly Communication (Amir Aryani) PIDs and AI at Research Link Australia (Mingfang Wu and Lyle Winton) Open Discussion https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/pi...
