Op zondag 16-10-2022 kwamen er hele bijzondere gasten naar vliegbasis Leeuwarden, namelijk 4 Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptor's van het USAF 90 FS met als thuisbasis Elmendorf Richardson AFB Alaska USA. Er stonden toen vanwege de situatie in Oekraïne 12 Elmendorf F-22's gestationeerd op Lask AFB in Polen en 4 daarvan kwamen deze dag naar Vliegbasis Leeuwarden om samen met F-35's en F-15's van het 495 FS van RAF Lakenheath en F-35's van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht te oefenen in de integratie van 4e en 5e generatie wapensystemen en internationale samenwerking, vooral ook met het oog op de actuele situatie in Oekraïne. F-22 Raptors zijn zeer zeldzaam aan deze kant van de plas en het was dan ook de allereerste keer dat er Raptors te zien waren in Nederland en Leeuwarden had de primeur om ze te mogen ontvangen. Vele honderden spotters uit het hele land en zelfs uit België en Duitsland waren naar Leeuwarden gekomen om deze voor Europa zeer bijzondere gasten welkom te heten. Een uur voordat de Raptors hun wieltjes op het Leeuwarder asfalt zetten kwam er nog een Boeing C-17A Globemaster III van het NATO SAC Heavy Airlift Wing vanaf Lask AFB om ondersteunend personeel en onderdelen in te vliegen. Dinsdag 18 oktober, kwamen er nog een paar McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagles van het 495 FS van RAF Lakenheath naar Leeuwarden. Kortom het was een zeer mooie dag met mooi weer en er zijn wel mindere zondagen.
