Vivian Hart, born in 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana, grew up in a household filled with music. Her father was a jazz saxophonist, and her mother sang in the church choir. This rich musical environment nurtured Vivian's talent from an early age. By her late teens, she had developed a powerful voice and an emotional depth that captivated audiences in local clubs and church gatherings. In 1961, Vivian caught the attention of Layla Amara Cole, the renowned queen of Sacred Soul and a prominent figure at the Sacred Soul Sessions label. Impressed by Vivian's talent and potential, Layla signed her to the label, hoping to mold her into the next gospel sensation. Their partnership initially flourished, with Layla mentoring Vivian and guiding her early career. However, creative differences soon surfaced. Vivian had a deep love for jazz and blues, influenced by her New Orleans roots, while Layla's focus was more on traditional gospel. These differences led to a significant falling out between the two artists. Determined to follow her own musical path, Vivian left Sacred Soul Sessions in late 1961. Despite her departure, Sacred Soul Sessions decided to release Vivian's hauntingly beautiful remake of Louis Armstrong's classic "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen." Titled "Is Nobody Knows," her rendition blended soulful vocals with a touch of blues, creating a powerful and unique sound. The song resonated with listeners across the globe, but it was in Africa where it had the most profound impact. The song's deep emotional appeal and Vivian's heartfelt performance made her a sensation on the continent. With the song creating buzz in Africa, Sacred Soul Sessions re-signed her and financed a tour for her in Africa. Her tour was met with overwhelming enthusiasm, as audiences connected with both her music and her personal story of overcoming adversity. The tour not only solidified her popularity but also opened doors for future artists to explore international markets.
