Tadeusz Faliszewski – On nie powróci już (He Won’t Be Back Anymore) Tango z rewii „Warszawa w kwiatach” teatru Morskie Oko (from the Morskie Oko revue „Warsaw In Flowers”) Muz. Henryk Wars – Słowa: Andrzej Włast, Syrena-Electro 1929 (Polish) NOTE: This absolutely haunting tango, composed in 1929 by Henryk Wars, belongs to the golden elite of Polish prewar songs. It has a troublous and sometimes truly dramatic melodic line, which is enforced by Andrzej Włast’s poingnant lyrics, describing the abandoned lover’s desperate decision to throw herself into the arms of first suitor, or perhaps many, who’d crave her. The song was presented in May 1929 in theatre Morskie Oko, in a farewell show before the holidays, by the diseuse Stanisława Nowicka accompanied by three revelers: Eugeniusz Bodo, Witold Roland and Ludwik Sempoliński. The audience’s reaction was entusiastic, especially that this song was presented as part of a two-song presentation, in which the other was a later internationally renowned tango “Oh Donna Clara” (Polish title: “Tango Milonga”), also sung by Nowicka. After the show, in perfect humours, the whole cast went outside the theatre to bid farewell to Eugeniusz Bodo and Witold Roland, who decided to try Bodo’s new car and make a nighttime ride to the city of Poznań, to see the newly opened International Fair of 1929. Unfortunately, their song became a prophecy: a few dozen kilometers after Warsaw, the unexperienced driver (Eugeniusz Bodo) hit a pile of stones at the roadworks and Witold Roland – a talented dancer and singer – died. Tadeusz Faliszewski sings this song in a rather melo-declamatory way, so it’s good to hear it also in a really “hot” presentation by Chór Dana accompanied by maestro Henryk Gold with his orchestra: • Polish Tango: Chór Dana - On nie powróci j...
