A warm welcome both to and from Florida on Day 1 of the Sidemount Essentials Team Trip! After a later than planned arrival, we got to meet Joseph Seda and family for coffee and cylinder setup before heading to Ichetucknee State Park to dive Blue Hole aka “Jug Hole. After getting fills at Cave Country Dive Shop, the rain clouds descended and we had to don dry suits in the car! We then hit the water and were hit by the flow just trying to stay steady at the surface for equipment checks! Each diver was using different cylinders –Alu80s for Audrey, LP85s for Joe and LP100s for me – and making the PSI / BAR gas matching was good revision ;-) Heading into the cave required a lot of pull and not so much glide! The cave passages allowed for places to hide from the flow and taking time to read the cave and choose your path was essential. The flow can have a dramatic effect on buoyancy and this cave is clearly not suitable for entry level divers when the conditions are like this. Joe said “it’s about as bad as it gets”! Sidemount configuration wise, the sliding D rings we are using are handling the heavier cylinders, but probably it’s time to change to a thicker loop bungee for tomorrow :-) Joe has been diving these caves for years and has been sharing his knowledge with us on the systems, local protocols & procedures - if you like what you see and fancy any training or diving in Florida then definitely contact him at / sidemountseda
