As you look to reduce your carbon footprint, a DIY eco-friendly garden is a great step. In this video, Denise Buchanan of Sacred Garden Designs shares tips for a sustainable garden. The first step is to walk through the outdoor space. Take note of the existing conditions of the ecosystem, from water to local wildlife. If the current garden design requires high water use, replace the lawn with a low-maintenance ground cover. Alternatives for lawns include mulch, succulents, or low-water use plants. Select low-water use plants for your eco-friendly garden. Some examples of the right plant include aloes, sedums, senecio, kangaroo paw, Forest Pansy Redbud, camellia japonica, and the New Zealand flax (Maori Queen variety). Berkeley sedge is a good alternative for grass that will require less sprinklers and less mowing. Group plants in your sustainable garden by sun and water needs. Add native plants to your landscaping that are adaptable to local conditions. You can also look into companion planting. Install a smart watering system. There are weather-based systems, which reduce or stop watering on rainy days. Minimize runoff with a drip irrigation system that addresses each plant individually. You won’t waste water with sprinkler systems that spew water out indiscriminately. Plus, you’ll fill up that watering can less. Recirculating water features that reuse water are also great fixtures for eco-friendly gardens. Local wildlife like birds will flock to them. Use eco-friendly landscape materials in your outdoor space that are biodegradable, will decompose, or are sourced from recycled materials. Hire a landscape contractor with eco-friendly gardening practices. They should have gardening ideas that are respectful of the land. They should also use materials that are biodegradable or compostable, so they won’t end up in a landfill. They should properly curate native plants, which will mean less fertilizer and less water use. An eco-friendly garden is a great way to spread awareness of sustainability and reduce your personal carbon footprint.
