This is a concert performance of Act II: Scene 6, Finale from John Beeman's opera, “Ishi.” It was performed by the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra (John Kendall Bailey, conductor) on October 18, 2025 at Old First Church in San Francisco. Ishi was the last member of the Yahi people who came out of hiding in 1911. He was taken to San Francisco where he lived the rest of his life. This scene is beautifully sung by Robert Vann, as Ishi; Jacqueline Goldgorin, as Mother; and Michael Orlinsky, as both Kroeber and Waterman. The opera's poignant libretto was written by Carla Brooke. Ishi returns to Deer Creek with the anthropologists, Kroeber and Waterman. Ishi had a terrifying dream recalling the death of his mother and sister and his perilous escape. The spirit of his mother comes to calm him and guides him to the meaning of his dream. The next morning Ishi leads a hike pointing out the Yahi places. His mother reappears and asks him to continue teaching the ways of the Yahi. Ishi tells her that he will do so and returns to the museum enabling him to connect his past to his present.
