Have you ever wondered what it's like to do ear tagging, tail docking, and castrating of sheep or lambs for the first time? Here we show what it was like our very first time doing it! And we include some how-to moments and also provide links to equipment we used. We hope this helps.you! We were mostly successful but also share some failures. There was one lamb in particular (see at timestamp 13:43) whose ear was quite bloody because we were not far enough away from the vein in the ear. Thankfully, the mama ewe sheep cleaned it off very well by the next morning, which was amazing in itself! It also reminded us that these animals have instincts that are unexplainable except by Design! Ear tagging: Placing a tag in the ear for identification, usually with a tag of a certain color and/or number. Placement is usually 2-3 inches from the head and avoiding the veins. This way it is secure enough to stay over time and does not catch easily on brush, trees, etc. Tail docking: Shortening the tail for aesthetics, cleanliness, or reproductive access. Opinions differ in all of these areas. Place the rubber band where the skin stops and the wool starts, which you can see on the underside of the tail. Castrating/castration: Removing the testes (or testacles) of the ram (male) sheep, usually for reproduction management reasons. The rubber band is placed over the scrotum and the testacles are moved into the banded area. The banded sections of the tail and the testacles sack will eventually dry up from lack of blood flow and will fall off in the following weeks. One downside we find to this method is that there is a rubber band left on the ground somewhere in the pasture or barn area, which does not decompose easily. Currently, we find this tradeoff acceptable but not ultimately desirable for the sake of land management. We have not explored other options yet such as cutting off the tail and cutting out or crushing the testacles. Reference videos from Premier 1 Supplies that helped us. About us: We moved to a farm property in 2019, and little did we know that about a year and a half later we would be starting a completely new journey. We found ourselves without regular employment in early 2020, and eventually our hearts turned toward living from the land, something we had talked about but did not have any real ideas for making it a reality! We bought a flock of sheep and a few pigs and added them to our chickens and goats. Now we are discovering a life of farmer rancher homesteader, whichever it is, and sometimes all of them in one day! We are on an adventure filled with wonder and amazement, and joyful in how life can feel very complete in work and family and friends and health. We hope you'll enjoy the journey along with us, and maybe even be inspired to do it yourself!
