It's been ten years since the day I shot myself. I shouldn't say that, though. I shouldn't make this post or the video it introduces. It's not something people want to talk about. It could even have deeply negative impacts on my career and personal life. So, I shouldn't post this, but I die inside with every news story and Facebook post about another loss to suicide. It hurts because I saw the edge of both sides. There are 129 suicides, including 20 veterans, each day in the US, but thats just a statistic. The reality is that each one of those people are real with friends, families, and loved ones. Those 129 once had hopes and dreams of life that have been shattered then cut short. They are everyday people that sit beside us each day. They are your neighbors, your coworkers, your family, your kids, your spouse. It may even be you that hangs on the edge as you read this. I feel like those are the reasons we should be able to talk about suicide. The 129 shouldn't have to be afraid to talk about their struggles. They need caring ears that listen without judgement. We need to normalize the act of speaking. For those reasons I made this video. I made it in the hopes that it might save one life, even if only for another day. I made it with the hope that even one person might gain understanding of the struggle. I made it with the hope that we can start really talking about life. One day at a time, until we can talk of life in weeks, months, and years. I hope you watch this video. I hope it speaks in the ways I intended. I hope it finds someone who needs it. I don't want to lose you to silence. Not mine, and not yours. Share if you think this could help someone you know. I may post more in the future.
