STUDIO SESSION FOR JOHNNY CASH AT THE MEMPHIS RECORDING SERVICE FOR SUN RECORDS 1958 SUN RECORDING STUDIO 706 UNION AVENUE, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE SUN SESSION: THURSDAY JULY 10, 1958 SESSION HOURS: UNKNOWN PRODUCER AND RECORDING ENGINEER - JACK CLEMENT "THANKS A LOT" Composer: - Charlie Rich Publisher: - B.M.I. Hi-Lo Music Incorporated Matrix number: - None - Undubbed Master Take 5 - Not Originally Issued (2:34) Recorded: - July 10, 1958 Released: - 2007 First appearance: - Bear Family Records (CD) 500/200rpm BCD 16325-3-16 mono JOHNNY CASH - THE SUN OUTTAKES With Cash's recording of Charlie Rich's "Thanks A Lot" we get to hear how the song came together. This session includes eleven takes, not all complete, that includes various attempts at the original undubbed recording, further attempts at overdubbing the vocal chorus and some studio antics with the chorus working on some unused different endings to the song. Also included is the undubbed master. Cash may have been uninterested at this stage of his career with Sun Records but it certainly doesn't show as his commitment to producing good quality material is evident. Charlie Rich responded to the call with "Thanks A Lot", a well constructed self-piying weeper. Cash turned in a solid reading of Rich's material and even the choral overdub was respectable. About the only laughable thing associated with this side is Charlie Rich's original demo of the song. Obviously, some serious attention was directed to Rich's original lyrics, which were worked over before the session. Otherwise, Cash might have following Rich's lead and sung, "You went to see the lawyer / told him I was oh so mean / You told him I was the most no good thing / you had ever seen / He's suing me for everything I've got / Thanks a lot, thanks a lot". "Thanks a Lot" is a song originally recorded by Johnny Cash. It was written for him by Charlie Rich. The song was recorded by Cash on July 10, 1958 during his final sessions for Sun Records. It would be released as a single (Sun 316, with "Luther Played the Boogie", another song from the same session, on the opposite side) on February 15 of the next year, when he already left the label for Columbia. Before that, the song appeared on Sun Records' album ''Greatest! Johnny Cash'', that came out in January 1959. Cash would receive a BMI award for this single. ''Thanks a Lot'' was another strong Charlie Rich composition about a guy who sarcastically thanks his lover for all the pain she's putting him through. We feel the singer's hurt as he watches his lover leave him for somebody new. John M. Alexander. The Man in Song: A Discographic Biography of Johnny Cash It's odd that two of the last six Phillips International singles feature ''Thanks A Lot'' (PI 3581) , a tune written by Charlie Rich for Johnny Cash in 1958. This version features a very subdued performance by Little David Wilkins on his first record. The plug side of the record, ''There's Something About You'', featured David's double-tracked harmony. Davis Wilkins, like Carl Perkins, Carl Mann, Rayburn Anthony, and Tony Austin was yet Sun artist from Jackson, Tennessee area. Born in the small town of Parsons, some 40 miles from Jackson, in 1941, David hung out with Perkins, and played around town with Carl Mann and Tony Austin. Carl's ex-drummer W.S. Holland brought him to Sun. Sam Phillips presented David with the songs he was to learn and David returned home to learn them, then came back to Memphis to record them. As best he can remember, the session musicians included his own guitarist, Tuck Shutt, Stax drummer Al Jackson, Scotty Moore playing tic-tac bass, possibly Roland Janes on bass, and possibly Martin Willis on tenor saxophone.
