The highlight of this festival is the two towering torches, a male and a female, each over 6 meters tall. These massive torches are prepared by residents of the Chihara and Tamate districts, with the construction process beginning on the Sunday directly preceding the event and continuing until the morning of the festival day. They are crafted from straw and bamboo, and then decorated. Around 8:00 PM on the day of the festival, the sound of conch shells played by Shugendo practitioners fills the air as the torches are set ablaze. The male torch is lit first, followed by the female torch. The roaring flames illuminate the winter night sky, attracting a large crowd.
