It is one of the deepest and oldest lakes in Europe. It has a unique aquatic ecosystem that is important around the world and is home to more than 200 species that live nowhere else. In 2010, NASA gave it the name of one of Titan's lakes. UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves now includes the Ohrid-Prespa Transboundary Reserve, which is in both Albania and North Macedonia. In 2019, UNESCO also named the side of Lake Ohrid that is in Albania a world heritage site. In 2021, the part in North Macedonia was named a protected Ramsar site because it met all nine criteria. In Albania, the part of the lake near the coast is a Managed Nature Reserve. Part of the lakeshore in North Macedonia is part of the Galiica National Park. Ohrid and Struga are in North Macedonia, and Pogradec is in Albania. Both of these towns are on the lake. Other than that, the lake is surrounded by many villages and resorts in both of the basin countries.
