Leverkusen (ots) - On March 26, 2025, at 11:51 p.m., the Leverkusen Fire Department received emergency calls from several emergency callers about a fire in an apartment building on Düsseldorfer Strasse in the inner city of Opladen. The control center immediately alerted both professional fire department stations, the emergency services, and several volunteer fire department units. Based on initial feedback from the scene, which indicated a large number of injured people, additional emergency services units from the Mettmann district were also alerted. When the first emergency services arrived, the third floor and parts of the roof structure were already fully ablaze. The stairwell was also filled with smoke. Several people were trapped in their apartment by the fire; one person had already escaped onto a window sill on the third floor and was surrounded by heavy smoke. The fire department immediately initiated extensive rescue measures using turntable ladders and several teams attacking from the inside. A total of five people were rescued from the burning apartment. One person was able to escape from the building with minor injuries before the emergency services arrived. Despite immediate resuscitation measures, two people died at the scene due to the severity of their injuries. Three people with moderate injuries were initially treated at the scene for burns and suspected smoke inhalation and quickly transported to the nearby hospital. The flames were prevented from spreading to the adjacent buildings. The roof structure of the burning building is in acute danger of collapsing. Another 11 uninjured residents of the apartment building were cared for by the German Red Cross (DRK) at a nearby care center and were able to find temporary accommodations themselves. The structural integrity of the entire building was inspected by the Leverkusen building inspectorate, and the building is closed until further notice. Gas and electricity supplies were shut off by the utility company EVL. The building and the apartment where the fire occurred were sealed off by the police. The police are investigating the cause of the fire. Due to the risk of collapse, half of Düsseldorfer Straße is closed in this area. The Leverkusen Fire Department will continue to conduct regular checks throughout the day. Source: Press release from the Leverkusen Fire Department
