5th Generation Warfare in Pakistan | Indian Propaganda | Keyboard Warriors

Over the last couple of years, the term 5G warfare has gone viral in Pakistan, spurred on by repeated references to the term by political leaders, military officials, and media personalities. These figures frame 5G warfare as disinformation campaigns launched by Pakistan’s external enemies — particularly India — and supported by treacherous internal allies. But the ubiquity of the term in Pakistani circles is not mirrored in global discourse. According to a recent Al Jazeera report, “fifth-generation war” is not a widely accepted idea. In fact, the term was relatively unknown in Pakistan until December 2017, when it burst on the scene thanks to a press conference held by then Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations, Major General Asif Ghafoor. Since then, Pakistani social media has been flooded by users claiming to be part of Pakistan’s new 5G war defense force. What’s concerning is that, more often than not, the ire of Pakistan’s young keyboard warriors is directed towards internal critics of the state and progressive political movements, like Aurat March and Supreme Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa, and not external enemies. Where did the concept of 5G warfare come from anyway? Why did it become so popular in Pakistan? And how is it impacting Pakistani politics and civil society?
