In the 1940's, the corner of Willow and Main Street in Chattanooga was home to the Stuckberry Drug Store. Customers could cure what ailed them and also satisfy their sweet tooth. Current owner Jay Susman says, He was a druggist who actually started the Sno cone concentrates. Decades later, the name is different but the original recipe remains. He's got some formulas that we own today and are probably a little bit different than what everyone else does, Susman says. Today, Holder concessions makes over 40 of these Sno cone flavor concentrates, but on today's menu is peach. Mary Susman is responsible for every pour in Holders 100 gallon pot. Adding a preservative is the first priority, and then the base of every batch, the flavor, is next. After taste is taken care of, it's on to the presentation. We are actually doing yellow and a color called strabarine, Mary Susman says, which is a red-based color. One gallon of this concentrate makes 32 gallons of Sno cone syrup all carrying the Holder name, so it can come to a Sno cone stand near you. It's kind of fun to do that, Jay say, especially when you see the sno cone when it has our label on it, you kind of smile.
