What is Photovoltaic Effect. what is solar cell or Photovoltaic cell, Explain the optical losses in solar cell Give the advantages disadvantages and applications of solar cell. The photovoltaic cell is a semiconducting device which directly converts the solar energy to the electrical energy. The fundamental photovoltaic cell is fabricated by making the junction of n-type and p-type semiconducting materials. This basically works on the principle of photovoltaic effect {reference}. Photovoltaic energy conversion in solar cells consists of two essential steps. First, the light energy or photons (i.e. electromagnetic radiation) absorption in the semiconducting material of the solar cell, generates the electron-hole pairs. Second, these electron-hole pairs get separated by the built-in potential field formed at the junction of the device. The electron moves to the negative terminal while the hole moves to the positive terminal. In this manner, this phenomena generates the potential difference or the electromotive force (e.m.f.) across the terminals. These forces drive the electron through a load in the external electric field for doing. Reflection losses: Use Antireflection coating Recombination losses : Maximum thickness of depletion region Absorption losses : Thin n-type and Thick p type layer Spectral Losses : Match the band gap of solar cell with solar spectrum Advantages of Solar cell 1) It is a renewable energy source. 2) It direct converts the Solar energy to the electrical energy. 1) It has been easy operation. 2) It is an economical power generator in long term. 3) Solar cell is environment friendly. 4) No noise produced during operation. 5) No fuel required for operation. 6) Long life from 15 to 30 years. 7) Can generate the electrical power at domestic level. Disadvantages of solar cell 1. Sun light is required for the solar cell operation. 2. High initial installation cost. 3. Power generation depends on season(Low in rainy season). 4. The performance of solar cell depends on geographical location. 5. Low efficiency. 6. Efficiency may degrade with time. 7. Continuous maintenance is required. 8. Battery is needed for storage. 9. Solar cell is a DC source hence an inverter is needed for AC appliances. 10. The operation can be performed in daytime only. The application for solar cell 1) Solar cells are used in satellites. 2) Solar cells are used in toys. 3) They are also used in watches and calculators. 4) Solar cells are used in electric vehicles. 5) Solar cells are used in remote light system. 6) Solar cells are also used in water treatment. 7) These cells are also utilized for water pumping. 8) Solar cell can work as an emergency power supply.
