We enter the workforce with a narrow set of skills. Jobs that we take on early in our career are narrow too, where our skills are most relevant. But as we gain experience, training and responsibilities, over the years we develop excellent domain knowledge. In doing so we are developing deeper and deeper knowledge. But to become a T shaped leader, we need breadth too. There will come a time in our careers when we need conceptual skills, not just technical skills. We need to develop an understanding of general expertise and general management, more than technical skills. To acquire these conceptual skills, we must seek out multi domain experience that will add a different dimension to our abilities in business. The combination of the depth of technical expertise and the breadth of multi domain expertise makes the T shaped leader. So take a moment to pause and ponder: ► Have you volunteered or explored opportunities to work in a new domain? ► Does your organization support and have mechanisms to offer new domain exposure as a leadership development mechanism? ► What efforts have you made to avoid becoming a frog in the well?
