The video tells the story of a student feeling sad on the last day of seventh grade. The experience is a bitter sweet symphony as classmates excitedly share their summer plans. Francisco reflects on his emotions and the experience of having to go to work while other students enjoy their summer. He encounters a friend and sees adults have a conflict for the first time which makes him reflect on his own situation and a bully he learns to deal with. The intense account of a family's journey through the California countryside, living a life of constant movement, from strawberry fields to cotton fields, and from campsites to sheds. Narrated by a young man who yearns to study and earn the right to choose his home, this is a story of survival, faith, and hope. A journey that will open readers' hearts and minds. Francisco Jiménez immigrated to California with his family from Tlaquepaque, Mexico. As a child, he worked in California's agricultural fields, and the stories in Cardboard Boxes are largely autobiographical, as are his children's books, The Butterfly and The Christmas Gift. Border Paths, the sequel to Cardboard Boxes, is entirely autobiographical. Francisco Jiménez received his MA and PhD from Columbia University and now chairs the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Santa Clara University. He lives in Santa Clara, California, with his wife and three children.
