Her latest novel, Assassin (HarperCollins India), which was (originally published in Malayalam as Ghathakan, revolves around a middle-aged professional named Satyapriya, who finds herself the target of a conspiracy, leading her on a quest to uncover the truth behind the plot to assassinate her. The novel, which draws inspiration from real-life events, begins a week after demonetisation is announced and concludes on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. The novel’s central themes are identity and gender, power and patriarchy, class and money; Meera explores how they intersect to shape the lives of women in India. In an interview to The Federal, Meera says that the real trigger for the novel was the murder of Gauri Lankesh, who had published one of her stories. Meera states that she primarily writes about women as men’s inner thoughts remain elusive to her. Her stories shed light on the normalisation of violence against women in India. Writing in Malayalam, she acknowledges the importance of her translators in breaking language barriers.
