'White Flower' performed by the Sarajevo National Theatre and Sarajevo Philharmonic orchestra in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Cardiff Ardwyn Singers/Cantorion Ardwyn Caerdydd and musicians in Wales. A musical dedication of remembrance from Wales to Bosnia, created during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown to mark the 25th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide. The song is about the soul of a victim describing his mother’s heartache and depicting the infamous ‘White Flower’ that has become the symbol of the Srebrenica genocide. It is sung in English and Bosnian with subtitles. The melody and lyrics were written by a survivor of the Siege of Sarajevo, Elvir Solak, the composition was arranged by the Cardiff Ardwyn Singers' Director, David Leggett with solos by Remembering Srebrenica Wales' Co-Chair Abigail Carter and Prima Soprano soloist of the Opera of The Sarajevo National Theatre Aida Corbadzic. The power of music and love has brought together two countries and almost 140 volunteers who joined together to create this masterpiece - we hope you share it with your loved one. Contextual background: In July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces overtook the town of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite it being declared as a United Nations safe area. In less than a week, 8372 mostly Muslim men and boys were murdered in what has been labelled, by the UN, as “the worst crime on European soil since the Second World War”. They were selected for execution purely on the basis of their identity.
