Godhra Kand: Sabarmati Express में किसने लगाई थी आग? The Sabarmati Report| Aasan Bhasha Mein

In this video THe Lallantop’s Kuldeep Mishra explained about the Sabarmati train burning(Godhra case) case of 2002. The 2002 Godhra case, a significant and controversial event in Indian history, began on February 27 when the Sabarmati Express was attacked near Godhra railway station in Gujarat. A coach carrying Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya was set on fire, killing 59 passengers, including women and children. The attack, attributed to a mob of Muslim residents, sparked violent communal riots across Gujarat, leading to over 1,000 deaths, predominantly among Muslims. Investigations declared the incident a premeditated conspiracy. In response, the Gujarat government formed the Nanavati-Shah Commission in March 2002 to investigate. Initially led by retired Gujarat High Court judge K.G. Shah, the commission added retired Supreme Court judge G.T. Nanavati after criticism of Shah's perceived closeness to then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Over six years, the commission reviewed 40,000 documents and 1,000 testimonies. Its 2008 interim report supported police claims of a planned attack by a mob from Godhra's Signal Falia area. It named cleric Maulvi Husain Haji Ibrahim Umarji and former CRPF officer Nanumiyan as masterminds, citing evidence like petrol purchases and forensic findings. However, key witness testimony and other findings faced scrutiny. In February 2011, a trial court convicted 31 individuals, sentencing 11 to death and 20 to life imprisonment, while acquitting 63, including alleged mastermind Umarji, for lack of evidence. Appeals followed, seeking harsher penalties and challenging acquittals. In October 2017, the Gujarat High Court upheld the conspiracy theory but commuted all death sentences to life imprisonment, maintaining the life sentences of 20 others. It reaffirmed the acquittal of the 63 individuals. The court also directed compensation of ₹10 lakh for each victim’s family.
