Originally inspired by the Tour de France of the Compagnons du Devoir, this seven-year Tour of France is accomplished by apprentices who go from Master to Master to learn their trade. Maison Corthay wanted to tour Switzerland and visit the finest craftsmen. Undisputed masters of their Art, some relatively unknown, they all represent Excellence – incredible creativity, exceptional know-how, years of experience, perfect transmission… Maison Corthay wanted to bring these exceptional personalities to the forefront, and share their immense enthusiasm with the world’s best journalists and car owners. The Excellence Run was graced by exceptional car collectors, who all possess that passion for exquisite objects and appreciate exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. Entrants – from the world over - were all guests and participants of Maison Corthay. Ferrari 250 GT California, 275 GTB , or Aston Martin DB5, .... Like our finest shoes, Maison Corthay belives that the most incredible objects are designed and crafted in order to be used. An ‘active’ philosophy – cars should be driven, not just shown on a lawn... An exceptional car is to be driven, as a bespoke shoe is to be worn – together, a synergy of elegance and refinement to be taken to celebrate excellence. Through this unique journey to promote excellence wherever it is located, celebrating beauty and the value of work that is put into these exceptional objects, maison Corthay dreamt up a rally that was playful and mezmirizing, ‘Landscapes that corresponded to ones dreams’, commented one of the car collectors. The first stop was in the hills above Montreux in a cottage called La Neuvaz - where the traditional Gruyere cheese making culture lives on in tanks heated by wood fire by the copper fireplace. The rally then headed to Vaux-sur-Morges, near Lausanne, to visit the atelier of Luc Breton, a luthier and musicologist, who is seeking to reconstruct vintage instruments by restoring their sounds and colours from yesteryear. In a harmonious roar, the 6-cylinder 300SL ramped up to reach Gstaad then Weggis. Onto the shores of Lake Brienz, where the Lötscher workshop prides itself as the last remaining traditional maker of genuine Swiss Cuckoo Clocks. At Meiringen, a dangerous road diverted on the right: narrow, winding and supremely steep. The engines were set for a challenge amidst the suffocating heat. Rewarded are the brave, with the discovery of the bespoke furniture maker, Staub Atelier, and its sumptuous Corte Nascota High Cabinet-piece that was a sight to behold, the result of more than 10,000 hours of work. "I wanted to overcome this challenge, and prove that it is possible to design and craft one’s dreams and bring them to fruition ", said the François Staub.
