Why should existentialism and religion be separate, since the both of them have powerful effects on how we see the world and how we imagine ourselves? In an anti-Fascist move against the idea that God has created a place and a meaning for everyone, Slavoj Zizek discusses a reading of Christianity in which the freedom of choice in how we live is given to us by the incompetence, and even the deliberate removal, of God from our world, described in the Book of Job. He finishes by showing how the idea of Global Harmony, which he rejects, is also rejected by his favourite philosopher, George Hegel. Hegel was also an influence on German and French philosophy, including Marxism. The thumbnail image used here is Claude Cezanne's painting, Still Life With Skull. The image of the human skull was traditionally used in medieval Europe as a "momento mori," or a reminder of death. as a deterrent of arrogance and an encouragement to humility on the grounds that "you can't take it with you."
