Classical Conditioning or Respondent Conditioning after Ivan Pavlov is more common in video games than you think. It allows game designers to trigger a certain emotion at any given time in the game with an according visual or acoustic cue as trigger. Super Metroid experiments a bit with these techniques and creates something that twists your mind in a way you might not have thought.
