Tommi Niemela, a former professional goaltender and currently a head coach within the Finnish Ice Hockey Association presents on goaltender and player development in Finland. ---- Born in Helsinki, Finland, Tommi Niemela is in the midst of a three-year term with the Finnish Ice Hockey Association as head coach of its U16 national team. Previously, he served as a head coach with the Pelicans Lahti organization in the SM-League, since 2009, beginning with the Finnish Elite U16 SM-League and Division 1 program. After two seasons with the U16 team, he moved up to coach the U18 squad, and in 2013, he took the reins of the U20 Pelicans. Also involved with the IIHF, Niemela has served since 2009 as the leader of the organization’s goaltender coaching program at its development camps. He has lectured and presented on behalf of the IIHF around the globe, including in Romania, England, Scotland, Bulgaria, Abu Dhabi and Switzerland. Niemela holds a bachelor’s degree in coaching from the Haaga-Helia University of Polytechnic Sciences, an elite-level coaching degree from the Finnish Ice Hockey Association and a professional coaching degree from the Sports Institute of Finland. As a player, Niemela worked his way up through the European professional ranks, eventually tending goal for Jokerit Helsinki in the SM-League, along with stops in Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Holland and Germany.
