Archaeologists have discovered a 5,300-year-old skull that may have belonged to a patient who had the first ear surgery. One of the skull's cut marks near the left ear canal indicated surgery to reduce discomfort. The Dolmen de El Pendon, a Neolithic tomb in Burgos, Spain, yielded the skull, which scholars believe belonged to a middle-aged lady of the time. The skull was unearthed in 2016 by University of Valladolid archaeologists with over 100 other relics. Surgery to alleviate increasing pressure in the ear canal was undertaken, as shown by two holes in the skull, one on each side near the mastoid bones. According to the researchers, the operation would have helped relieve the patient's symptoms, but it would have been uncomfortable since it used less sophisticated devices and necessitated that the patient be restrained. For example, bone was found on the blade of a flint tool that was found in the dolmen. This suggests that the "healer" used the tool to cauterize the wound.
