Education Purpose ⚠️ Battle of Iwo Jima 1945 – A Bloody Battle in the Pacific On February 19, 1945, United States forces launched an invasion of Iwo Jima, an island in the Japanese archipelago in the Pacific. The island was considered strategic as an airbase to support bombing raids on mainland Japan. The United States deployed around 70,000 Marines from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Divisions. They faced fierce resistance from approximately 21,000 Japanese soldiers who had constructed a vast network of bunkers, tunnels, and hidden firing positions. The battle lasted for 36 days, with the Japanese offering near-fanatical resistance based on their code of no surrender or retreat. Their defensive tactics caused heavy casualties among American troops. In total, over 26,000 casualties were recorded on both sides, including around 6,800 American soldiers killed. Nearly all Japanese defenders perished, most choosing to fight to the death. One of the most historic moments was the raising of the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, which became a symbol of courage and sacrifice. The Battle of Iwo Jima became one of the bloodiest engagements of World War II and highlighted the high cost of victory in the Pacific War. 📌 Don’t forget to Like & Subscribe for more military history content!
