NOTE FROM TED: Please consult a mental health professional and do not look to this talk as a substitute for medical advice. This talk only represents the speaker's personal business approach to and understanding of music, meditation, and mental heatlh. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... Can music (and the practices around it) reduce the world's male suicide epidemic? Ariana, Co-Founder of SPOKE (spoke.world) and scholar in Social Innovation at the University of Cambridge, believes it can. In this talk, she takes you on a journey through arts, science and culture. You'll leave with an understanding of how we might be able to leverage the power of music to improve the mental health of millions of people. As an activist and entrepreneur, Ariana is on a mission to enhance mental health through music. She believes that vast improvements can be made to society's mental health if the culture and interpretation of mental wellness tools had better resonance with those who need it most. Especially young men, whose suicide rates (as well as substance abuse, violence, and other mental health-related issues) far exceed female. Ariana founded SPOKE, a global movement and app merging lo-fi hip-hop, lyricism, and artistically produced sounds with meditation/mindfulness. Through working with their community of notable UK artists, producers, and creatives, SPOKE aims to make taking care of the mind & emotions more accessible and relevant for the millions of people currently missed out. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
