The trains stood puffing clouds of gray, To take the little ones away. Away from smoke and city noise, Away from all their favorite toys. The mothers stood and waved goodbye, With heavy hearts and teary eyes. They packed a bag with bread and cheese, To send them to the fields and trees. "Go find a place where you'll be grand, Far out across the quiet land. Where stars are bright and hills are green, And giant planes are never seen." The children wore their coats and caps, With luggage tags and heavy straps. They didn't know how long they’d stay, Or when they’d come back home to play. But then the sky grew very still, Behind the house and over hill. The winter came, the sun was low, And parents wanted them to go— Back to the streets they knew so well, Back to the stories they could tell. "The danger's gone," the people said, "Come home and sleep in your own bed." But hidden in the shadows deep, While all the city was asleep, A ghostly man with cruel eyes, Told the mothers wicked lies. "Bring them back," he whispered low, "It's safe for them to come, you know." He wanted them in city lines, Beneath the bombs and warning signs. The posters warned, "Don't be a fool, Keep them safe and keep them cool. The country air is fresh and sweet, Better than a broken street." For soon the sirens started loud, From underneath a heavy cloud. The Blitz began with fire and light, Throughout the long and scary night. So leave them where the grass is long, Where they can grow up brave and strong. Keep them far from fire and foam, Until it’s safe to bring them home.
