When most people think of doctors, they think of shots and medicines. But physicians have an opportunity to address health on a much deeper level. They can address social problems, like financial stress and poverty, as the health problems they are by reaching across sectors to collaborate with business, not-for-profits, and government. One example of this approach is partnering with accountants to provide free tax preparation and access to the Earned Income Tax Credit, the largest anti-poverty program in America, in pediatric offices. Lucy Marcil is a Pediatrician & Social Entrepreneur who works to create innovative solutions buffering kids from the adversity faced growing up in poverty. Domestically, she co-founded and run StreetCred, a non-profit providing anti-poverty financial services in pediatric waiting rooms. She is a pediatrician at Boston Medical Center. Internationally, she has worked on pediatric health-systems innovation and strengthening in Namibia, Bangladesh, and Kenya. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
