Bill to ban ICE's 287(g) program in Maryland faces law enforcement criticism

On Wednesday, nearly a dozen Sheriffs from across the state descended on Annapolis to speak out against a bill that would prohibit local partnerships with federal immigration authorities. If passed, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) 287(g) program would be banned in Maryland. That program allows correctional officers to identify and hold noncitizens for up to two days at ICE’s request. “The 287(g) program is a program that only exists in the jail, not on the street,” explained Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, “We don't make decisions. We don't decide who is removed. We don't decide who is detained.
