In 1998 I was a teenager living on Sandrock Rd in Lewisham with my mates Martin and James - me and Martin used to DJ and James would MC, along with two other lads called Budzy and Detrimental. They'd come over, we'd load up the bucket with soapbar, and get mashed while we ran the tunes we were buying from Blackmarket Records. It was a fun time. We really wanted to be on pirate but didn't know how to make that happen, so instead we called ourselves Sandrock Soundsystem, put the speakers by the open kitchen windows, and blasted out jungle and garage to the street. We felt like the music was too good to keep it to ourselves, don't know if the neighbours felt the same. A bunch of the records I play in this mix are ones I bought in that period - tracks like Stangled Duck, See Red and Represent were/are absolute classics of rolling DnB - dark but still danceable, which was the sound we wanted, massively influenced by the sets played by Brockie and Andy C. One of the common things from that time is that we pooled our records - those 12s were expensive when you were a broke kid! Coming to do this mix I realised that I had never actually owned Dillinja's Test 2, and was just playing James's copy. FML! Looking back though, I like how communal it all was. Anyway, a quick note, the internet crapped out on me whilst recording this, so the intro of Sicknote was cut off - I enjoyed the rest of the mix too much to do it again, it is what it is, real life is raw!
