TAC October Artist Spotlight -- Gloria Christian of Gloria's Gourd Art Gloria Christian (of Gloria’s Gourd Art in Huntsville) was born in Alabama, but has lived in many areas of the United States, including Puerto Rico. Her father’s work in civil service moved the family many times and built for her a life rich in experience-- one that allowed her the ability to see, feel, and appreciate the uniqueness of momentary place. This ability to see the subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle changes in climate and culture created in Gloria the desire and ability to capture feelings and moments and to hold them. Art for Gloria was a means of documenting differences and connecting childhood memories into an idea of home that wasn’t limited to a single locality. Travel made Gloria a photographer and a poet. Right after high school, she entered the field of photography, teaching herself as she went, and she made a living in that field for many years, finding publication for her camera work, as well as for her poetry. While she and her husband have now settled in Huntsville, AL, she continued to travel beyond her youth, and that travel continued to inspire Gloria’s art. It was her time in Phoenix, AZ, that rooted in her a tremendous love and appreciation of the Native American art and culture. When back in Alabama, Gloria saw an article in a magazine about wood burning on gourds. She loved the juxtaposition of the simple, natural styling and yet undeniable elegance reflected in the work. Thus, her gourd-etching days began. It was at this time that the Alabama Gourd Show also began and she entered her first etched piece, winning third place. She had found her niche. As a self-taught artisan, she progressed in carving and other mediums including wood burning, coiling, inlay and painting. She enjoys creating colorful, one-of-a-kind pieces to show the beauty of nature. To achieve a look or style she likes, she continues to add new techniques. Since that first win, she has participated in many shows including those in West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Florida. Her many ribbons were won throughout her twenty years as a Gourd Artisan. Her art sells from the West coast to the East coast and even across the ocean. It is a passion for Gloria-- she is committed to continue to learn, teach, and hopefully, inspire others to appreciate. Gloria says, “Art is my passion, gourds are my canvas!”
