Applied Biomechanics: 💪🏼 Most muscles are 3rd class levers and work at a mechanical disadvantage (mechanical advantage less than 1). This means that when you introduce an external load to a muscle like the bicep, it needs to produce around 15x as much internal muscle force as the external load introduced. 📊 By contrast, the calf is a 2nd class lever. It actually works at a mechanical advantage of roughly 2.0 🏋🏽♂️ So if the goal is to load the bicep tendon, we can do so effectively with drastically less load than the achilles tendon. Yes, tendons respond to load differently and yes we need to introduce a tolerable load as a starting point and monitor progress. 📈 But we need to take biomechanics into account here. When it comes to the achilles, we’re going to need to progress to pretty significant loading (more than most PTs realize) if we want to create meaningful, lasting change to tendon properties.
