The church of St Maurice was built in the 12th century as a private oratory for the Terzaghi nobles, who had expressed the wish for an oratory inside the fortified castle. The oratory was converted into a school in 1599, until the college moved inside the noble palace. The church was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century, with the construction of a new bell tower, a Baroque façade and some beautiful frescoes. The bell tower was equipped with a bell in 1715; the same Varese bell foundry cast a larger bell in 1754, which was used to break storm clouds. The documentary begins with some footage of the historical complex, and then focuses on the oratory and the two ancient bells, first tolled to make the tonal analysis and then rung together as per tradition. The bells toll three times a day, to mark the moments of the day. The oratory in Gorla was frescoed in the 14th century, as evidenced by some pieces of wall painting found during restoration. In the meantime, the history of the college began, officially becoming the Royal College of the Empire in 1710 at the behest of Emperor Joseph I of Habsburg. The number of students was so great that it prompted the Oblates to erect the college's solemn quadriporticus, the centrepiece of the complex with a portico supported by sixty granite columns. The church and college were confiscated by the French government in 1810, after Napoleon's intervention. School activities continued because the rector and vice-rector used all their family assets to purchase the college, which has borne the name of Rector Rotondi since 1841. The Rotondi College is currently the oldest Catholic school in Italy.
