What is Stevia: Stevia Rebaudiana is a plant species which is considered to be a natural sweetener, is a native of the subtropical, tropical south and Central American regions. The leaves of this plant have been in use for about 1500 years. The local people of two regions in Brazil and Paraguay used the leaves as sweeteners for tea and medicines. Opportunity for Stevia Cultivation: Stevia is currently considered as the "green gold", as natural sweetener used to reduce sugar and synthetic sweeteners as aspartame or sucrose. Moreover, Stevia as a natural and antioxidant ingredient can be used for the prevention of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The rising concern about the spread of obesity and diabetes, and a growing awareness about healthy foods in western societies have stimulated, in the last years, a strong interest toward stevia sweeteners as alternative of sucrose and artificial intensive sweeteners. The worldwide demand for purified steviol glycosides from stevia is steadily increasing, and it is expected that in the future the agricultural production capacity will be lower than the market demand. This provides a strong incentive to explore the possibilities to cultivate stevia and to produce leaves and extracts, beyond the traditional production zones. The cultivation of stevia might represent a formidable opportunity for the growers, in order to diversify the cropping systems and to meet the increasing market demand for high-quality and traceable raw material. In addition, several legislative initiatives, such as the steviol glycosides approval as food additive in several countries, represent favorable factors for the development of a stevia-based agro-industry. Stevia Rebaudiana is an important commercial crop. Stevia has been in a great demand for its natural sweetness without any calories and zero glycemic index as the best sugar substitute for diabetics, obese and low-calorie diet and also for some of its medicinal benefits. The plant is originally from Paraguay near Brazil. It is cultivated in large scales in China, Brazil and South America. Global production of stevia products was 5100 MT in 2014 costing about USD 347million. The global stevia market size is projected to reach USD 771.5 million by 2022, largely owing to its use as a sugar substitute in various applications such as dairy products, bakery & confectionery products, tabletop sweeteners, beverages and convenience foods. Stevia is an attractive alternative to sugar and a clean label ingredient because it adds virtually no calories to the food or beverage product it is incorporated in. The major factor attributed to the growth of the market is the increasing number of product launches and innovations in the food & beverage industry coupled with the need to serve the demand for sugar alternatives from consumers suffering from diabetes and obesity. Considering the facts India has the maximum number of diabetics and Pre-diabetics in the world and obesity in the urban cities increasing rapidly thus stevia and stevia products has a bright future in the coming years. This gives a good opportunity for the Indian farmers who are looking for alternative crops for sustainable regular income for long term.
