🏃♂️ Prehab vs. Rehab: Why What You Do Before Surgery Matters Welcome back to Whiteboard Wednesday with Dr. Jeffrey Edwards from Sarasota Vascular Specialists. Most people understand rehab—that’s what happens after surgery to regain strength, balance, and function. But what many don’t realize is that prehab can be just as important. 🔹 Rehab • Happens after surgery or injury • Focuses on regaining strength, mobility, and independence • May involve physical therapy or a rehab facility 🔹 Prehab • Happens before surgery • Prepares your body to handle surgical stress • Helps you recover faster and safer 💡 What does prehab look like? • Stay active—don’t shut down or stay sedentary • Walk daily (30–60 minutes if tolerated) • Practice deep breathing to improve lung function • Maintain muscle strength with light weights, bands, or cables • Keep blood flowing and lungs moving ⚠️ Surgery and anesthesia are stressful on the body. The stronger and healthier you are going into surgery, the better your body can handle what comes next. ✅ Why prehab works: • Better cardiovascular fitness • Preserved muscle density • Improved lung capacity • Faster recovery and fewer complications The goal is teamwork: 👉 You do the work before surgery. We do our part during surgery. Rehab steps in if needed afterward. If you have a vascular procedure—or any surgery—coming up, talk to your surgeon about prehab. Chances are, they’ll tell you the same thing: keep moving. 📞 Call (941) 294-5146 to schedule a consultation or learn how to prepare for an upcoming procedure. #WhiteboardWednesday, #Prehab, #Rehab, #SurgeryPreparation, #VascularCare, #PatientEducation, #HealthyRecovery, #SarasotaFL
