Road Wars PC (2001) - BETA Demo Gameplay

WARNING Volume is LOUD so turn it DOWN! This is a beta demo of the rare 2001 racing combat sim known as "Road Wars". I was able to find a copy of this game and get it working, hacking into the game to unlock all usable features. The only way I could get this working on Windows 7 was to use dgVoodoo 2, so big thanks to Dege for making such an awesome graphics wrapper. Otherwise the game runs with severe graphics issues to the point where it is unplayable. There is an absolute shit-ton of things that they did to this game before the final was released; some things in this beta were actually more promising than what the final came to be. These differences include: 1. Uses DirectX 6.1 versus the final DirectX 7.0 version of the game. 2. Completely different car models and tracks compared to the final game, which included different cars like the 69' Corvette and the Ferrari 308 GTB. Each vehicle had their own engine sound and data compared to the final which had many duplicates/palette swaps (Bud and Wainright, Animal and Daisy, plus the three other Avenging Angel duplicates). 3. Three characters were planned to be in the game but removed from the final. These include Psycho (Ferrari 308 GTB), Nowhere Man (Lamborghini Countach), and Hidden (car unknown but resembles a BMW M1). The only playable character of these three in the demo is Psycho. Heartbreaker also originally was supposed to drive a 69' Corvette instead of the C5 in the final release (car data remains the same). 4. A MISC garage option which included special items that were to be bought and equipped. These included Turbo Boost (Nitrous in the final) and the Missile Jammer, along with some exclusives such as Air Strike and Sabotage. None of them can be used in the beta demo (Track Plans is just your track map and radar). 5. Special Drivetrain upgrades were included but not usable. These include a Rear-End Ratio and Gear Sets change, which allows you to alter your car's top speed vs. acceleration. 6. None of the vehicles use Chrome Mapping but graphics options did have a built-in Windowed Mode and Mip-mapping (texture filtering) setting. Mip-mapping was turned off for it caused severe slowdowns upon collisions. 7. Multiple different tracks were planned, such as entirely different versions of Frozen Valley, Underground, RWA Speedway, and Mountain Run (shown in this video), as well as a new tracked called Eight Ball (looks like a figure eight) along with two arena based tracks with no maps which include Deathway and Colliseum. These tracks appear to be demolition derby arenas focused on simply driving around and destroying one-another without any racing focus. 8. Different in-game textures and effects, including an entirely different font compared to the final. Not as many flashy effects such as sparks and flames compared to the final, but much higher resolution textures such as missile explosions and car shadows. I would argue that even the flames that come out of the cars are much cleaner than the final (I am using forced Anisotropic 16x texture filtering though so keep that in mind). 9. Different car physics. This game is arguably much more difficult than the final; it is easier to get destroyed and cars react to collisions much more strongly. Being hit by a guided missile once will send the cars flying into the wall, or at least spin them out. 10. Built in replay option and a ghost mode. While you can find the replay option being planned in the final version game files, this game shows the possibility of it being implemented, although grayed out. The ghost mode was also locked and the game didn't have a quick-race mode. Heartbreaker's theme was taken from the final game, along with her loading pic. Psycho's theme is Electra's theme from the final, being used as a placeholder in the game. However, the Bud the Crud pic used as her loading pic is exclusive to this demo. Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/file/wjc76de... That's all I have for now. So much potential in this game; why was it all lost? If you have any game versions or info on this version of the game (NOT the final), please let me know and send them to me. I will gladly take a look at what was in store.
