Ex-NCP corporator Vanraj Surayakant Andekar shot dead in Pune, sister and her husband booked Around 9 pm on Sunday, a group of men attacked Vanraj Surayakant Andekar near Doke Talim in Pune's Nana Peth area. Vanraj Surayakant Andekar, a former Pune Municipal Corporation corporator from the NCP, was shot dead in the Nana Peth area on Sunday night, police said, adding that they detained two people including his brother-in-law for their suspected involvement in the murder. According to the police, a group of men attacked Andekar near Doke Talim in the Nana Peth area around 9 pm. An FIR was registered at the Samarth police station in connection with the incident after a complaint was lodged by his father Suryakant alias Bandu Andekar, known to be a dreaded gangster of the “Andekar gang”. Vanraj Andekar’s sister Sanjivani Jayant Komkar, her husband Jayant Lakshman Komkar and others including Prakash Jayant Komkar, Ganesh Lakshman Komkar, Somnath Sayaji Gaikwad, Aniket Dudhbhate, Tushar alias Aba Kadam, Sagar Pawar, Pavan Kartal and Sam alias Sameer Kale are the accused in this case. They have been booked under sections 103 (1) and 61 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita—related to murder and criminal conspiracy—and sections of the Arms Act. As per the FIR, Vanraj Andekar’s sister and brother-in-law believed that their shop was demolished by the corporation’s anti-encroachment department following his instructions, when he was a corporator. Also, the police suspect there was some recent dispute between Vanraj Andekar and his brother-in-law. The police suspect that his sister and brother-in-law had conspired to kill Vanraj Andekar with the help of Somnath Gaikwad, a criminal from the Ambegaon Pathar area who is on the police records. Acting on a tip-off to police havaldar Sachin Ahiwale, a team led by senior police inspector Vijaymala Pawar of the Faraskhana police station detained two of the accused, Ganesh Lakshman Komkar, 37, and Jayant Lakshman Komkar, 52, both residents of Bhavani Peth. The police have obtained CCTV footage showing 10-12 people firing bullets at Vanraj Andekar and also attacking him with sharp weapons, leaving him in a pool of blood. He was rushed to the KEM Hospital, where he died during treatment. After the murder, a huge crowd had gathered in the Nana Peth area during the night and police were deployed to control the situation. Vanraj Andekar won the civic elections in 2017. He was arrested in criminal cases in the past, according to the police. The “Andekar gang” has been accused of criminal activities over the past four decades. His family is involved in local politics and known to be influential in the Nana Peth area.Shops in the entire area remained closed on Monday.
