Women with existing Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes face greater risk of pregnancy complications. For that reason, it is important for these women to prepare prior to becoming pregnant. As Steven Gabbe, MD, a Maternal Fetal Medicine physician at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, explains, this includes having diabetes well under control, with a hemoglobin A1C of 7% or less, and checking overall blood vessel health, including a review of kidney function, eye health, and hypertension. In addition, some medications may need to be switched prior to becoming pregnant. Dr. Gabbe highlights Ohio State’s unique approach to diabetes care during pregnancy, with the Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists working closely with internists and diabetologists to ensure the best possible care.
