Sunset over the Bay - oil painting on canvas by Andrew Barrowman

Today I'm in the studio working on an oil painting on stretched canvas. It's of the sunset over the bay looking towards St Ives in Cornwall. I am 'loosely' using photographic reference for this one, which was part of a commission and painted over several sessions. The photo was used as a guide to help get started but then my experience and imagination took over which was great fun. I used Michael Harding and Winsor and Newton oil paints and the palette consisted of Cobalt blue, Ultramarine blue, Cerulean blue, Magenta, Cad red, Cad yellow, Lemon Yellow, Yellow ochre, Indian red, Burnt umber. The viewer is on Gwithian beach looking over the bay towards the popular fishing village of St Ives, Cornwall as the sun sets. I particularly enjoyed keeping the 'soft' feeling of a muted sunset that we often get in Cornwall.
