(24 Sep 2014) US President Barack Obama said on Wednesday new Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is the right person to lead Iraq as the country faces an enormous threat from the Islamic State group. Obama held his first one-on-one meeting with al-Abadi since he took office this month on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly gathering. Obama said he's impressed that al-Abadi understands there must be political change for Iraq to succeed and he credited al-Abadi with reaching out to all sectarian groups and articulating a vision of reform. Obama said the US fully supports that vision. "My main message to the Prime Minister is that although we cannot do this for you, we can be a strong partner and we are fully committed to your success," Obama said after the meeting. The leaders met in the UN Security Council just after Obama spoke to the General Assembly. Al-Abadi said through a translator that Obama has promised weapons and supplies for Iraq's armed forces. He's calling for that assistance to be delivered quickly. "I am very thankful for President Obama's promise that weapons and supplies would be delivered to Iraq as soon as possible so that Iraq can defeat ISIL and overcome this crisis," he said.
