Awards for alumni and current participants on our “publish-as-you-go” doctoral programmes for researching higher education. In the first two years doctoral researchers into higher education on these programmes (one residential-based and the other fully online) produce three journal article-equivalent assignments and often get them published. We recently celebrated those who had been most successful in producing and publishing really high quality articles, as well as those who have had the most impact in improving higher education practices through their research. The winners for DPER were Dr. Catherine O’Connell (3:22) for her work on global university rankings and Prof. Ray Land (5:38) for his ground-breaking work devoted to the enhancement of learning and teaching in higher education during and subsequent to being on the programme. The winners for HEREE were for academic merit Rob Shaw for his work on professionalising teaching in HE and for ‘making a difference’ Colm Kelleher (9:22) on quality assurance in higher and particularly self-evaluation by course teams. Awards for alumni and current participants on our “publish-as-you-go” doctoral programmes for researching higher education. The quality of the applications for the awards was so high that we had a number of Honourable Mentions. These went to Dr. Amal Abou-Setta; Patrick Baughan; Dr. Simon Stephens and Prof. Paul Kleiman. Amal’s work on communities of practice in Egypt, Patrick’s work on sustainability in higher education, Simon’s highly-rated publications out of all three core modules and Paul’s work on creativity and his impact on higher education generally were all recognised as incredibly valuable by the awarding panel. By happy coincidence, as we were celebrating on that day (22nd of September) the award to Lancaster of University of the Year was announced by the Times and Sunday Times, making that day even more enjoyable.
