Bibb City Mill Columbus GA with a Drone Located on the Chattahoochee River, Bibb City is a mill village in Columbus, Georgia. Both the mill and its village opened its doors for business in 1902. Two things make the Bibb City unique. First, is the fatherly eye the Bibb Mill kept on village residents for 60 years, including renting its 260 homes. The city was its own municipality surrounded completely by the city of Columbus for over 90 years (2000 saw the dissolution of the town). The centerpiece of Bibb City was the Bibb Manufacturing Company. Built in 1902, the mill ran over 1000 feet long and was 750,000 sq ft. Bibb City was built to house Bibb workers. As the company grew, so did the surrounding mill communities. Bibb provided company housing, churches, and schools; other structures included swimming pools, auditoriums, and gymnasiums. By the 1920s each of the Bibb communities also had an on-site social worker who implemented clubs, athletic programs, and medical care. At its peak in the 1940s, the mill employed 2,500 workers and was the largest cotton mill in the United States. America's involvement in World War II proved profitable for the company. During World War II (1941-45) the company was the largest war-industry producer in Georgia. Bibb Manufacturing closed its doors, March 20, 1998. Shortly after midnight on October 30, 2008, the Columbus Mill was destroyed by a massive fire. Over 100 years of history was lost when Bibb Manufacturing went up in flames and burned to the ground leaving only the front facade.
