VE Day: Russia scales back Victory Day parade amid coronavirus fears

Russian President Vladimir Putin presided over the country’s annual Victory Day celebrations, this year marking 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe, which was slimmed down this year as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Last month, Putin postponed the highlight of the annual celebrations, a massive parade in Red Square intended to showcase the country’s military might. Instead, a sombre Putin laid a bouquet of red roses at the Eternal Flame war memorial outside the Kremlin. Russia’s most advanced warplane, the Sukhoi Su-57 stealth fighter, joined 75 military planes and helicopters in a fly-over above Moscow to commemorate the day.
