Our body needs some cholesterol to make hormones such as - vitamin D and some substances that help us to digest foods. Our body makes all the cholesterol of its own as needed . Cholesterol is also found in foods from animal sources, such as egg yolks, meat, and cheese. But the most common cause of high cholesterol is an unhealthy lifestyle. This is because of the few reasons- 1) Eating Unhealthy foods- eating lots of bad fats. One type, saturated fat, is found in some meats, dairy products, chocolate, baked goods, and deep-fried and processed foods. Another type, trans fat, is in some fried and processed foods. Eating these fats can raise the LDL (bad) cholesterol. 2) Lack of physical activity- Due to lots of sitting and verlittle exercise. This lowers our HDL (good) cholesterol. 3) Smoking- It lowers HDL cholesterol, especially in women. It also raises your LDL cholesterol. Genetics may also cause people to have high cholesterol. Other medical conditions and certain medicines may also cause high cholesterol. Most importantantly , Triglycerides are not a type of cholesterol, but they are part of a lipoprotein panel (the test that measures cholesterol levels). A normal triglyceride level is below 150 mg/dL. It needs a treatment if someone have triglyceride levels that are borderline high (130-180 mg/dL) or high (200 mg/dL or more).
