Fr. Thomas Keating introduces a 20-minute session of Centering Prayer. During its first 4 minutes he offers verbal guidance, followed by silence and concluding with a very slow praying of the Lord's Prayer. Recorded 9/17/99 among prisoners in Folsom, CA who practice Centering Prayer. Here are the basic guidelines for this contemplative prayer practice: 1. Choose a sacred word as the symbol of your intention to consent to God’s presence and action within. 2. Sitting comfortably and with eyes closed, settle briefly and silently introduce the sacred word as the symbol of your intention to consent to God’s presence and action within. 3. When engaged with thoughts, return ever-so-gently to the sacred word. 4. At the end of the prayer period, remain in silence with eyes closed for a couple of minutes.
